Friday 22 July:
All swimmers to arrive at Fraserburg by Friday evening, 22 July and attend a swim briefing at the Kliphuis from 6:00pm. A traditional Karoo braai meal will be available directly afterwards.
A cash bar will also be available. Meals will also be available at Kliphuis. All meals are for swimmers’ own accounts.
Saturday 23 July:
On Saturday morning, meet at Nuwedam at 7:20am.
The 1 mile Ice Swim will begin from about 7:30am (conditions dependent – please be prepared for flexibility) in groups of eight swimmers at a time.
The 600m Endurance Swim will take place after the last Ice Swim is complete.
All swimmers must go directly into the medical tent after exiting the water to be attended to by medical staff who will discharge you once you have recovered.
At least two emergency boats will be on the water should a swimmer need to be pulled out and lifesavers on several rescue craft (boards) will paddle alongside swimmers.
The route will be set close to the shore should you wish to pull out at any stage. Make sure you have very warm clothes at hand for directly after the swim. The event should be over by 2pm.
Most importantly, get is as much very cold water training before the event. This is vital for acclimatisation purposes. Ensure you are totally medically fit and don’t take risks if you are not.
A big screen TV will be set up at the agricultural grounds for rugby viewing on Saturday afternoon and the awards ceremony will begin there at 6:30pm, followed by a potjiekos dinner and cash bar for. Leave Fraserburg at your leisure.
Kindly note:
- All meals and accommodation for swimmers’ accounts.
- Bring very warm (and waterproof in case of rain/snow) clothes, particularly for after your swim.
- Be flexible on swim day – adverse conditions may lead to a delayed start.
- Fires will be set up at the water’s edge for friends and family.
- Hot chocolate will be available for swimmers at the dam, and on sale for others. Food will also be on sale at the dam.
- This is a rural town and there are virtually no amenities at the dam — be prepared to rough it and to enjoy the traditional Karoo lifestyle!
